A phone labelled 4G can still fail as a practical Singapore handset if Voice over LTE does not work or an imported variant depends on disabled 2G service. IMDA’s March 2026 handset standard says covered phones must have 2G disabled by default from 31 December 2026, while emergency cell-broadcast requirements have applied since 1 April 2026. With 3G already retired, voice and emergency calls depend on working VoLTE, so buyers should test calls rather than judge readiness from a 4G or 5G icon.

A phone that physically contains an older radio is not necessarily configured for Singapore networks. The practical test is whether 2G is disabled by default, 4G or 5G service works on the local bands, and Voice over LTE can carry ordinary and emergency calls with the intended operator.
Before buying an imported handset, record the exact model suffix, not only the marketing name. Regional variants can differ in radio bands, software and certification. Check the seller’s claims against the manufacturer specification and Singapore equipment-registration position.
Ignore the signal icon alone

Place a normal call and observe whether the connection remains on LTE.

Install the latest OS and system update available for the model.

Parallel imports may lack the local carrier profile even when hardware bands look correct.
Get written compatibility and return terms before purchase.

A household member may inherit the problem after the buyer leaves the shop.
Save model, OS, carrier, VoLTE result and support contact on a setup card.
How the case works in practice
A phone that browses on 5G but drops to no service when a call starts has not passed the practical readiness test. The buyer should resolve the VoLTE profile or return the device within the seller’s stated window.

Test the plan under real conditions
The model-suffix check matters most for parallel imports. Two phones with the same retail name may support different LTE bands or carrier profiles. Capture the model number from the settings screen or packaging, open the manufacturer specification for that exact variant and confirm that the seller’s return policy covers failure on the intended Singapore operator.
VoLTE should be tested with Wi-Fi off so the result is not confused with app calling or Wi-Fi calling. Place a normal call to a consenting person, watch whether the phone stays on LTE or 5G and verify two-way audio. Then receive a call and send an SMS. A data speed test alone cannot prove the voice path.
For an older or emergency-use handset, repeat the test after a factory reset and software update. Confirm that 2G remains disabled by default and that the phone does not expose a setting that invites reliance on retired service. Keep a supported primary device for emergency communication and follow the operator’s replacement advice where compatibility is uncertain.
Keep the test result with the exact handset model and operator.
After inserting the SIM, test mobile data, outgoing and incoming calls, SMS and the operator’s VoLTE indicator where available. Do not make a test call to emergency services. If voice drops to an unavailable legacy network, the device is not ready for normal use.
Businesses managing a device fleet should keep a model and firmware register. A later software reset or update can change network settings, so repeat the functional test after major changes. A sticker saying 4G does not prove the whole call path works.
