Lion City Sailors host Adelaide United on Thursday with Group F lead on the line

Lion City Sailors host Adelaide United at Jalan Besar Stadium on Thursday 5 November 2026, kick-off 6pm, in Matchday 4 of AFC Champions League Two Group F. The Sailors lead the group on seven points from three games, one clear of Adelaide, so a second win over the Australians in a week would put them four points clear of Adelaide with two rounds left.

How the Sailors won in Adelaide

The first meeting, at Coopers Stadium on 29 October, ended 2-0 to the Sailors. Hugo Gomes scored into an empty net in the 80th minute after goalkeeper Joshua Smits misjudged a Giovanni Haag corner, and Lennart Thy added the second three minutes into stoppage time, making the Sailors the first Singaporean club to win a competitive match on Australian soil.

They had 16 shots to Adelaide’s four by half-time and still went in level, after Hugo and Ilhan Fandi had both hit the woodwork. Adelaide’s clearest chances fell to Amlani Tatu, 18 and making his first start, who failed to convert twice in the closing minutes of the half.

“Not many teams come here and dominate as we did in the first half,” said head coach Mark Jackson, who was appointed in September.

Six straight wins and a rotated squad

The Sailors arrive on a run of six straight wins in all competitions, counting up to Sunday’s 4-0 win over Balestier Khalsa at Bishan Stadium on 1 November. Five of those six were clean sheets.

Jackson made nine changes from the Adelaide line-up for Balestier, and Shawal Anuar, Antonio Mance from the penalty spot, Matthias Phaëton and Thy scored. That result left the Sailors second in the Singapore Premier League, a point behind Geylang International with a game in hand, as covered in our SPL table after the Eastern Derby.

Mance went off early in Adelaide and was replaced by Ilhan. He then started against Balestier and was taken off at half-time along with Bailey Wright, when Jackson replaced both of his starting foreign outfield players.
