A free solo exhibition of new works by Indonesian artist Eko Nugroho is on at STPI Creative Workshop and Gallery at 41 Robertson Quay until 10 October 2026.
STPI’s exhibition page for Eko Nugroho Strange Monster View, checked on Saturday (Aug 29), lists the run as 22 August to 10 October 2026, with admission free. The gallery is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm, and closed on Sundays and public holidays.
WHAT THE WORK IS
STPI titles the show STRANGE MONSTER VIEW. The listing frames Mr Nugroho’s figures as hybrids of man and machine, drawn from street art, graffiti and comics, and tied to identity, perception and belonging.
The same page places the works in his second residency at the STPI Workshop. It describes the Singapore material as an inquiry into social norms, tourism, architecture and culture, including chilli crabs and cyborgs, and characters mutated by televisions and smartphones. That is the organiser’s published claim, dated to this check.
Named works on the page include GROWING BUT NOT GROWTH (2025), a unique screenprint with debossing and colour spray on STPI handmade shaped paper measuring 107.5 by 81.5 by 0.7 cm. WE WATCH BEHIND THE GRASS (2025) and WE WATCH BEHIND THE BONES (2025) are listed as screenprints with foiling and flocking on linen canvas.
STPI says masks sit at the centre of Mr Nugroho’s visual language, as symbols of performance, concealment and protection. WE WATCH BEHIND THE GRASS is described as pairs of eyes under dense foliage. WE WATCH BEHIND THE BONES is described as eyes masked by carcasses.
THE ARTIST
Mr Nugroho was born in 1977 and is based in Yogyakarta. STPI’s artist note says his practice merges batik, embroidery and shadow puppetry with street art, caricature, animation and comics, and examines democracy, freedom, identity and the urban environment.
The same note records a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta, in 2006. It places his work in collections including the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris, M+ in Hong Kong and the Singapore Art Museum.
STPI lists two Workshop residencies, in 2012 and 2025. The first Singapore solo at the venue, We Are What We Mask, ran from 7 September to 9 October 2013. STRANGE MONSTER VIEW is the second STPI solo, built from the 2025 residency.

HOURS AND TOURS
Fort Canning MRT on the Downtown Line is the nearest station listed: Exit A, then about eight minutes along River Valley Road towards Robertson Quay. Great World on the Thomson-East Coast Line is listed at about 10 minutes. Clarke Quay on the North East Line is listed at about 12 minutes.
Guided tours are free, with drop-in guests welcome. STPI’s tour page lists selected Tuesdays at 11.30am, Wednesdays at 6pm, Thursdays at 11.30am, and Saturdays at 2pm and 5pm. Tours include a visit to the Workshop, where the prints and paper works were made with STPI’s print and papermaking team.

29 AUGUST PROGRAMMES
Saturday (Aug 29) is a gallery day. STPI lists Arty Afternoon: Urban Impressions: Embossing and Stencilling from 11am to 5pm as a free drop-in activity to emboss Singaporean motifs onto a postcard and add colour with prepared stencils. Further dates on that page are 12 September and 10 October 2026, also Saturdays, 11am to 5pm.
Beyond the Eyes runs through the exhibition, 10am to 7pm during gallery hours. STPI describes it as a free drop-in communal activity in which visitors make a pair of monster eyes and add them to a wall of gazes.
Sunday 30 August is a closed day on the visit page. The next listed Saturday Arty Afternoon after 29 August is 12 September 2026.
A ticketed contrast on the same arts calendar is Godot Theatre Company’s ART at Esplanade from 18 to 20 September 2026, with a published Cat 1 to Cat 6 ladder. STPI’s show has no ticket ladder.
