Old phones and laptops can now go to Pick! lockers and SPX points for secure recycling

Old mobile phones, tablets and laptops can now go into recycling through Pick! lockers and SPX service points, with a certificate at the end showing the device was destroyed. ALBA E-Waste runs the service, called ALBA Secure-Recycle, and covers its cost, so households pay nothing to use it.

For households, the point is the data. An old phone still holds photos, chats and banking apps. Under Secure-Recycle, each device is tracked from drop-off until an NEA-licensed recycler has processed it, and the person who sent it gets a Certificate of Destruction.

What each drop-off point takes

The two routes accept slightly different things.

  • Pick! lockers: mobile phones, tablets and laptops.
  • SPX service points: mobile phones, tablets and laptops, plus ICT peripherals and network devices.

Rechargeable batteries must not go into the lockers or the SPX packages. Damaged or swollen batteries should not be recycled this way at all; ALBA asks residents to call it on +65 3105 1608 for disposal advice.

How to send a device in

The process starts online, not at the locker.

  • Fill in the Secure-Recycle request form on ALBA’s website, choosing Pick! or SPX, and declare each device.
  • Wait for the email. Pick! users get a locker PIN and deposit details. SPX users get a tracking number and drop-off details.
  • Pack the device and drop it at the chosen locker or service point.
  • Follow the email updates as ALBA collects it and sends it for recycling.

An SPX request is valid for seven days, with a reminder one day before it lapses. For Pick!, the deposit window comes in the confirmation email, also with a reminder a day before expiry. A request only counts once every step is done, including declaring the right items and the correct tracking details.

Clear the phone before it goes

ALBA’s own checklist is short. Save any files and photos to keep, sign out of every account, take out the SIM card and any memory card, then do a factory reset.

The whole process takes 14 working days from receipt to certificate. The certificate is issued per order to the person who made the request and, where they are visible, it lists the device’s brand, model and IMEI, plus the number of items.

No STEP UP points on this channel

Secure-Recycle does not earn ALBA STEP UP points. ALBA covers the full cost of the secure handling, tracking and certificate, which is why this channel carries no points. Large household appliances, including monitors and air-conditioners, go through ALBA’s free doorstep collection instead.
