After travelling the international film festival circuit, homegrown film We Are All Strangers (我们不是陌生人) came home in the most Singaporean way possible – to the neighbourhood coffee shop. On 21 August, born-in-Singapore Tiger Beer brought acclaimed filmmaker Anthony Chen, cast members Yeo Yann Yann, Koh Jia Ler, Andi Lim and Regene Lim, and more than 500 fans together at S11 Ang Mo Kio for the film’s first-ever kopitiam Meet & Greet.
A film festival darling comes home to the kopitiam
Taking place a day after the film opened across the island, the evening turned an ordinary Ang Mo Kio coffee shop into a stage. The cast re-created the film’s iconic wedding karaoke scene, and Yeo Yann Yann put her on-screen bottle-opening skills to the test in a light-hearted, real-life showdown against fans. Tiger also surprised lucky diners with complimentary rounds, and the night closed with a celebratory yum seng as cast members and fans raised their Tiger beers to the heartlands that brought them together.
Made for Singapore, for Singaporeans
More than a meet-and-greet, the evening celebrated two Singapore stories coming together. Where We Are All Strangers captures the languages, relationships and everyday moments that make up life here, Tiger Beer has been part of those shared experiences since it was first brewed in Singapore in 1932.
“No matter how far the film has travelled, it is so much more meaningful when it is seen by the audience that I made the film for – an audience that understands the nuances, the language, the dialect and the culture,” said Anthony Chen, director of We Are All Strangers.
Why it matters
The tie-up is a neat piece of local storytelling: a heartland brand and a heartland film meeting over cold Tigers and plastic stools. For fans who caught We Are All Strangers in cinemas, the coffee-shop celebration was a reminder that some of Singapore’s best stories are told closest to home.
