Last autumn, we took a two-week trip to Japan. It was a self-drive itinerary starting from Nagano and ending in Tokyo. We stopped at Gotemba/Hakone and the Izu Peninsula in the middle.
Earlier in the year, my wife and I went on a 14-day self-drive trip to Kyushu, Japan. If you are planning one for yourself, check out my blog posts. Hopefully, the shared travel itinerary will help.
We arrived via Narita International Airport, picked up our car, and went to Matsumoto, Nagano.
I know the 1st part of the route seems unnecessary. Because we booked the flights late and considering SQ prices exceeded our budget, we flew ANA to Narita. In hindsight, it was a big mistake. We should have gone to Nagoya despite the cost.
Now that you are reading this, make adequate planning ahead of time. It will seriously reduce unnecessary travel times.
What is also slightly different this time is that we are travelling in a larger group—there are five of us. Travelling in a larger group will have challenges, such as logistics and catering to everyone’s likes and dislikes.
I cannot do random pit stops as much as I love to. (this is one of the key reasons I love doing self-drive in Japan).
As per the last time, I will chronologically break down the blog posts into days.

Hi Andrew, personally I enjoyed my Kyushu trip a little more. I found the trip planned to be abit more balanced. With a good mix of shopping, chillax and Onsen. That said, we generally experienced better weather in April too.
