Lions crash out of FIFA ASEAN Cup after 6-0 thrashing by Malaysia in Bandung

Malaysia beat Singapore 6-0 at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung on Thursday, 1 October 2026, knocking the Lions out of the FIFA ASEAN Cup in their final Group A match. The six-goal margin equalled the record set in 1978.

Malaysia led inside eight minutes through a Bergson da Silva penalty. Malaysia’s penalty came after Stewart fouled Tierney, and it was awarded following a VAR review. Singapore had their best spell straight after: Song Ui-young was put through in the 14th minute but was denied by goalkeeper Syihan Hazmi, and Kyoga Nakamura forced another save from distance six minutes later.

The second goal killed that momentum. Manuel Hidalgo worked his way through the Singapore defence on the left and squared for Stuart Wilkin to tap into an empty net in the 26th minute.

Malaysia keep pushing

Arif Aiman broke down the right and set up Bergson for 3-0 on 62 minutes. With Indonesia running up the score against Bangladesh in Jakarta, Malaysia went looking for more. Substitute Paulo Josué turned in a fourth from another Arif assist in the 76th minute, and fellow substitute Syahir Bashah beat the offside trap for the fifth in the 87th, a goal allowed to stand after a VAR check.

Bergson completed his hat-trick in the third minute of stoppage time.

Out in third place

Singapore finish third in Group A on three points, with one goal scored and eight conceded: a 2-0 defeat by Indonesia, a 1-0 win over Bangladesh through Harhys Stewart’s header, and this loss.

The result was not enough to take Malaysia to the final. They and Indonesia both finished on seven points with a goal difference of plus nine, and Indonesia’s 9-2 win over Bangladesh at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium sent the hosts through on goals scored.

What comes next

Indonesia meet the Group B winners in the final, and Malaysia face the Group B runners-up in the third-place match on Monday, 5 October. Group B finishes today, with Thailand playing the Philippines in Bandung and Vietnam playing Pakistan in Jakarta.

Singapore are due to play friendlies against Brazil and Paraguay in November, before the AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia in January, where they are grouped with Australia, Iraq and Tajikistan.
