Manchester City Women fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Bayern Munich Women at Sportpark Unterhaching on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, on their return to the UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase.
Bayern, a semifinalist last season, looked in control early on their first competitive night at the new ground. Giulia Gwinn opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Seventeen minutes later Kerstin Casparij turned the ball into her own net, and the hosts led 2-0.
Mead before the break, Wamser after
City answered before half-time. Beth Mead finished in the 45th minute to cut the deficit and change the mood in the away end. After the restart the visitors kept coming. Khadija Shaw missed a 62nd-minute penalty, but the pressure did not fade.
Late in the game, new signing Carlotta Wamser, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen, struck from inside the area in the 86th minute for her first Champions League goal and the equaliser. City left Unterhaching with a point on their UWCL return.
Bayern midfielder Linda Dallmann said her side lost intensity after the break and wasted late chances. Mead said City showed what they can do in Europe in the second half and need that for the full 90, with Real Madrid next in the league phase.
One point on the UWCL return
City reached the quarter-finals two seasons ago, then missed the European competition last season. Both clubs sit on one point after matchday one of the 18-team league phase, where the top four go straight to the quarter-finals and places five to 12 enter February play-offs. Referee Olatz Rivera Olmedo took charge in Unterhaching.
