Whenever our office gathers for a meal, there’s always one rule: it has to be halal—and, of course, somewhere new to try. This time, Deena recommended Chix Hot Chicken. Fun fact: she’s a massive fan of Taufik Batisah, who, by the way, co-owns this spot serving up Nashville-style fried chicken.
What’s Nashville Fried Chicken?
For those unfamiliar, Nashville fried chicken hails from Tennessee, USA. What makes it special? The chicken is marinated in a seasoned water-based blend, floured, fried to crispy perfection, and then coated with a spicy paste for that fiery kick (typically powered by cayenne pepper).
While the original Chix Hot Chicken outlet is at Jalan Pisang, we headed to their second location on Prinsep Street. According to Deena, this outlet is bigger, nicer, and more comfortable—and we’d have to agree.
The entrance is welcoming, though it feels like the space could accommodate a few more tables without feeling cramped.
Chix offers six levels of spice—from mild to the daringly named Atomic. Personally, I’m not one for self-inflicted torture, so I settled for the medium level, which wasn’t spicy at all for me. But if you’re feeling adventurous, head for Atomic!
Here’s what we ordered. (I will be attaching the menu at the end of this article).
The Ranch (Wee’s Order): Comes with option of a set (fries or slaw). For cheese lovers, upgrading to Cheese Fries is just an additional $1.90—worth it if you ask me!
Breakfast Slider (My pick): A smaller burger loaded with scrambled eggs and cheese—simple but satisfying.
Sweet Barbeque (Deena & Hubby’s Pick): A sweet and smoky twist on their classic fried chicken.
The Melt and Ham & Cheese Melt (Hamimah and Alison’s Choice): These sandwiches are fried and dusted with Nashville Spice Dry Rub. After tasting a bite, I’d recommend sticking with the burgers.
Tater Tots: A personal weakness of mine.
Surprisingly, this turned out to be my favourite. Bite-sized chicken mixed with tater tots? Honestly, I’d come back just for this as the burger chicken pieces were a bit too heavy on the crispy batter.
Meat-Free Burger (Daryl’s Order): For vegetarians, this option looks surprisingly close to the real deal.
You can pair your meal with water, soda pops, or a milkshake.
While their milkshakes won’t win any awards, they’re still a satisfying way to cool down after tackling the spice.
Here is the menu for your reference.
The next time you’re craving some halal chicken burgers, you know where to head to! Chix Hot Chicken serves up a satisfying mix of spice, flavour, and comfort. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the mood for a fiery feast.
