Champions League Quarter-Final Recap: Bayern Stun Real Madrid in Seven-Goal Thriller as Semi-Final Draw Is Set

The UEFA Champions League quarter-finals delivered drama, heartbreak and moments of pure brilliance this week, as the final four were decided across four scintillating second-leg ties. Bayern Munich produced a stunning late comeback against Real Madrid, Arsenal held their nerve to edge past Sporting CP, Atletico Madrid survived a Barcelona fightback, and Paris Saint-Germain crushed Liverpool’s hopes at Anfield.

With the semi-final draw now confirmed, European football’s biggest prize is tantalisingly close for the four remaining contenders. Here is a full recap of every quarter-final result and what lies ahead.

Bayern Munich 4-3 Real Madrid (6-4 on aggregate) — A Champions League Classic

The Allianz Arena in Munich was the stage for a breathtaking Champions League quarter-final clash between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid

If you had to pick one match to encapsulate the magic of the Champions League, this was it. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid served up a seven-goal thriller at the Allianz Arena on 15 April, with the Bavarian giants eventually prevailing 6-4 on aggregate to book their place in the semi-finals.

Real Madrid started the match in blistering fashion. Arda Güler needed just 60 seconds to open the scoring, and the Turkish youngster added a second in the 29th minute to put Los Blancos firmly in control. Aleksandar Pavlovic had equalised for Bayern in the sixth minute, but Kylian Mbappé’s strike on 42 minutes gave Madrid a commanding 3-1 lead on the night.

At half-time, few would have predicted what was to come. Harry Kane pulled one back for Bayern in the 38th minute to make it 2-3, but Real Madrid looked comfortable — until Eduardo Camavinga’s reckless second yellow card in the 86th minute changed everything.

With ten men, Madrid’s defence crumbled. Luis Díaz struck in the 89th minute to level the match at 3-3, and in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Michael Olise delivered the killer blow, sending the Allianz Arena into raptures and Bayern into the last four. The 15-time European champions were out, and Bayern were through 6-4 on aggregate.

Arsenal 0-0 Sporting CP (1-0 on aggregate) — Gunners Grind Their Way Through

If Bayern’s match was a fireworks display, Arsenal’s second leg against Sporting CP was a tense chess match. The Gunners went into the tie at the Emirates Stadium on 15 April protecting a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg in Lisbon, courtesy of Kai Havertz’s late goal.

Mikel Arteta’s side were far from their fluid best, and Sporting nearly caught them out. Geny Catamo struck the post with a volley just before half-time, while at the other end, Leandro Trossard saw a header crash off the woodwork late on. The combined expected goals tally was a meagre 0.93 — the lowest of any Champions League match this season.

It was not pretty, but Arsenal will not care one bit. The goalless draw was enough to see them through 1-0 on aggregate, and they have now reached consecutive Champions League semi-finals for the first time in the club’s history. With their Premier League title challenge in full swing — they sit top of the table with 70 points — this is shaping up to be a truly special season for the north London club.

Liverpool 0-2 PSG (0-4 on aggregate) — Dembélé Ends Anfield Dream

Liverpool’s Champions League campaign came to a crushing end as PSG dismantled them 4-0 on aggregate at Anfield

Anfield has witnessed some of football’s greatest European comebacks, but there would be no miracle on 14 April. Already trailing 2-0 from the first leg in Paris, Liverpool needed a performance for the ages — instead, they were comprehensively outclassed by a ruthless PSG side.

The Reds’ best chance came midway through the second half when they were awarded a penalty, only for the decision to be overturned following a VAR review. That proved to be the turning point. Ousmane Dembélé struck in the 72nd minute with a crisp left-footed shot from the edge of the area, before adding a second in stoppage time to seal a dominant 4-0 aggregate victory.

For Liverpool, it represents a bitterly disappointing end to their European campaign. With Alisson ruled out until the end of the season and just one win in their last five matches across all competitions, Arne Slot’s side are in a worrying run of form heading into the business end of the Premier League season.

Atletico Madrid 1-2 Barcelona (3-2 on aggregate) — Simeone’s Men Survive Scare

In the other quarter-final on 14 April, Atletico Madrid were given an almighty fright by Barcelona at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Diego Simeone’s side had taken a 2-0 first-leg lead to the Spanish capital, but the visitors tore into them from the start.

Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres scored twice inside the opening 24 minutes to level the tie on aggregate, and suddenly Barcelona smelled blood. However, Ademola Lookman’s first-half reply steadied Atletico’s nerves, and when Eric García was shown a red card for a professional foul in the 79th minute, Barcelona’s hopes were effectively extinguished.

Atletico held on to advance 3-2 on aggregate, but Simeone will know his side will need to be far more convincing in the semi-finals.

Semi-Final Draw: Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid, PSG vs Bayern Munich

The Champions League semi-final draw has pitted two mouth-watering ties. Arsenal will face Atletico Madrid, with the first leg at the Civitas Metropolitano on Wednesday, 30 April and the return at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, 6 May.

Paris Saint-Germain will take on Bayern Munich, with the first leg at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, 29 April and the second leg at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, 7 May.

Arsenal’s tie with Atletico promises to be a fascinating tactical battle between Arteta’s possession-based style and Simeone’s defensive organisation. Meanwhile, PSG versus Bayern is a clash of European heavyweights, with the defending champions against the side who produced one of the quarter-final performances of the season.

The Champions League final will be held in Budapest on 30 May 2026. The stage is set for what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to this season’s competition.
