Spain beat England 3-2 at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, 26 September 2026, as Mikel Oyarzabal finished a late Nations League thriller after Harry Kane’s slipped penalty hit the bar.
Lamine Yamal struck inside two minutes. Marc Guehi turned into trouble under Spain’s press, Yamal took the ball and beat James Trafford off the inside of the far post. England looked rattled. Ferran Torres had a finish chalked off for offside, then forced Trafford into another save before the hosts found a foothold.
Anthony Gordon levelled in the 36th minute on the counter. Elliot Anderson seized on a Nico Williams slip, Gordon played Jude Bellingham into space, and the midfielder slipped Gordon through for a low finish. Four minutes later Harry Kane headed England in front, stretching to meet Nico O’Reilly’s cross as Marc Cucurella could only help the ball on.

Kane stepped up around the 54th minute, slipped as he struck, and the ball clipped his standing foot onto the crossbar. Spain punished the miss. Substitute Álex Baena equalised from about 20 yards in the 60th minute after Dani Olmo cut out a loose O’Reilly pass, then Baena put Oyarzabal through in the 74th minute to chip Trafford for the winner.
England pushed late. Bukayo Saka whipped one wide of the mark, and Bellingham forced Unai Simón into a stoppage-time save, but Spain held on. England travel to Czechia on Tuesday.
