Where the city softens is the kind of free Esplanade stop that works best when you are already in the Civic District or Marina Bay area. The Hans Chew work runs all day at Esplanade Mall Level 3 Community Wall from 22 May to 23 August 2026.
The work looks at plants on city streets, discarded roadside items and everyday objects, then softens the hard edges of mass-produced things through hand-made ceramic parts.
Dates, Venue And Admission
- Dates: 22 May to 23 August 2026.
- Time: all day.
- Venue: Esplanade Mall Level 3 Community Wall.
- Admission: free.
- Artist: Hans Chew, Singapore.

What The Work Is About
Chew is a Singapore-based ceramic artist who studied ceramics at Tama Art University in Tokyo. His practice includes functional pottery, but this work is more about how objects carry social use, memory and awkwardness.
In this installation, simple ceramic parts are used to alter standardised industrial objects. The result asks viewers to look again at familiar urban things that are usually ignored, discarded or treated as background.
How To Pair The Visit
The Community Wall location makes this a short, low-friction stop before a ticketed show, dinner or walk along the waterfront. Families can keep it casual because there is no timed ticket or admission queue.
For more museum and arts planning, LBRD has also covered Flesh and Bones at ArtScience Museum and the Circle Line 6 public preview for upcoming city-centre movement.
