Seven Tokyo places, with hours from GO TOKYO.
Senso-ji in Asakusa
The reason to go is the Kaminarimon lantern and the 250-metre Nakamise approach: Tokyo’s oldest temple precinct, and still free. Neighbourhood: Asakusa, Taito.
Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, Toei Asakusa Line, Tobu Skytree Line or Tsukuba Express. Five minutes on foot from any of those Asakusa stations. The grounds stay walkable after Nakamise shutters. The temple is lit from sunset until around 11pm.
Meiji Jingu from Harajuku
The shrine forest is the quiet hour that actually sits on a timetable. Neighbourhood: Harajuku and Yoyogi, Shibuya-ku. JR Yamanote to Harajuku Station, or Tokyo Metro Chiyoda or Fukutoshin to Meiji-jingumae. About ten minutes on foot.
Meiji Jingu is free and open every day. In September the gates open at 5.20am and close at 5.20pm. Inner facilities run shorter, mainly 9am to 4pm. A 6pm arrival in September hits a shut gate.
Tokyo National Museum in Ueno Park
The museum is Japan’s oldest national collection. Neighbourhood: Ueno Park, Taito. JR Ueno or Uguisudani, ten minutes on foot to the main gate.
Collection galleries open 9.30am to 5pm, last entry 30 minutes before close. Fridays and Saturdays run to 8pm. Closed Mondays unless the Monday is a holiday. Adult collection tickets are 1,000 yen. The Kukai special ends 6 September 2026. Ueno Park itself is listed 5am to 11pm, with no park ticket.
Imperial Palace East Gardens
The East Gardens are the public piece of Edo Castle: stone walls, Ninomaru garden, the old keep base. Free. Neighbourhood: Chiyoda, beside Marunouchi.
Ote-mon is five minutes from Otemachi Station on several Tokyo Metro lines, and about 15 minutes on foot from Tokyo Station. Closed every Monday and Friday. Through September the gardens run 9am to 5pm, last entry 4.30pm. Friday 4 September is a closed day. So is Monday 7 September.
Shibuya Sky above the scramble
The scramble itself has no ticket. Shibuya Sky is the rooftop, 229 metres up Shibuya Scramble Square, with a published hour. Neighbourhood: Shibuya. Direct from Shibuya Station. The counter is on the 14th floor.
Open 10am to 10.30pm. Last admission 9.20pm. Same-day adult tickets at the counter are listed at 3,000 yen before 3pm and 3,700 yen from 3pm. Online sell-outs take the counter with them. The roof can shut in bad weather.
teamLab Borderless in Azabudai Hills
This is the Tokyo teamLab that still posts hours today: Azabudai Hills. Neighbourhood: Azabudai and Kamiyacho, Minato. Two minutes on foot from Kamiyacho Station, Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, Exit 5.
Official hours run 8.30am to 9pm, last entry one hour before close. Closed Tuesday 8 September 2026, then Tuesday 20 October and Tuesday 24 November. Adult entrance passes start at 3,600 yen on the official ticket page and move with the date. The Light Sculpture special, On the Asymmetry of the Universe, runs to Thursday 8 October 2026.
Ghibli Museum, Mitaka
Walk-up tickets do not exist. Neighbourhood: Mitaka, western Tokyo, on the edge of Inokashira Park. JR Chuo Line to Mitaka Station, then about 15 minutes on foot, or the museum community bus from the station.
Hours are 10am to 6pm. Closed Tuesdays, plus irregular maintenance days. Adult tickets are 1,000 yen for ages 19 and over. All admission is by advance reservation. Lawson Ticket releases the next month at 10am Japan time on the 10th. October 2026 entry therefore goes on sale at 10am on 10 September.
