Renew a Singapore Passport: Work Back From the Six-Month Validity Rule

Many destinations and airlines expect at least six months of passport validity, so plan renewal from the travel date rather than the document expiry date.

Singapore passports are generally valid 10 years for applicants aged 16 and above and five years for younger applicants.

Use the departure-date test

Count six months forward from the intended departure and check the destination and airline rules. The six-month norm is not a substitute for country-specific entry conditions. Use official foreign-entry sources for the destination and leave processing buffer. (ICA passport application guide)

ICA provides online application through its service and MyICA channels. Use only the official domain or app. Record the application number and do not hand identity documents to an unsolicited intermediary.

The photo must meet ICA recency, framing, lighting and background requirements. A rejected image can delay the application. Check the current photo guide immediately before submission rather than reusing an old visa picture.

Situation What changes
Less than six months on departure date Renew before travel
Passport has no usable pages or damaged chip Apply even if expiry is later
Applicant is under 16 Expect a five-year validity period
Travel is soon Check ICA processing and collection status before committing

Know the validity period

Applicants aged 16 and above generally receive a 10-year passport, while those below 16 receive five years because facial appearance changes more quickly. Validity is governed by the rules at application and issue, not by a travel agent estimate. (ICA passport validity release)

Follow ICA instructions on collection and cancellation. Do not assume an old passport remains usable after the new one is issued. Update airline bookings, visas and trusted-traveller records with the new passport number where required.

Wait for ICA readiness notification and use the available collection arrangement. Check name, birth date, sex and validity as soon as the document is received. A data issue is easier to resolve before the departure day.

Example: A passport expires on 20 February 2027 and the traveller plans to leave on 1 September 2026. The document has more than five months but less than six months remaining, so the prudent decision is to renew before the trip and confirm the destination rule.

Keep destination rules separate

Passport validity is only one entry condition. Visa, arrival-card, vaccination or onward-ticket rules can still apply. Build a country checklist using the destination authority and airline, then save the check date.
