The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries group has secured a fresh Land Transport Authority order for eight two-car trains on the Sengkang-Punggol Light Rapid Transit, bringing the planned fleet under its capacity upgrade programme to 33 trainsets.

The contract covers 16 cars in total. It sits inside a wider project LTA awarded to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in January 2022 to expand the SPLRT’s carrying capacity, and follows a May 2023 order for another eight two-car sets.
What the new trains add
Two trainsets of the same model entered passenger service in July 2025. This latest batch is for more units of that design. With the eight now ordered, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries plans to deliver 33 two-car trainsets in all under the capacity programme.
The Sengkang-Punggol LRT opened in 2003. It links the North East Line stations at Sengkang and Punggol to surrounding housing estates on rubber-tyred Automated Guideway Transit cars, which run with lower vibration and noise than steel-wheel systems. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries supplied the original trains and the full system when the network opened, and has handled after-sales work and upgrades for more than 20 years.
Why more capacity is needed
Sengkang and Punggol have kept adding homes, malls, schools and workplaces. Ridership on the LRT has risen with that growth. Extra two-car trains let more passengers move between the two towns and the North East Line without waiting for longer intervals at peak times.
Earlier work under the same upgrade stream already covered depot expansion and the shift to two-car operations. The new order is the next tranche of rolling stock for that plan, rather than a change of supplier or a new line.
Who is delivering it
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is taking the order jointly with its regional subsidiary, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific, which is based in Singapore. The Asia Pacific unit supports infrastructure and transport projects across the region, including Singapore.
The trains are for the existing Sengkang and Punggol loops that feed Sengkang and Punggol MRT stations. Commuters will see the new sets join the fleet as they are delivered and cleared for service.
