Everton 3-1 Newcastle: Barry seals Carabao Cup quarter-final spot

Everton are into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after beating Newcastle United 3-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday night, 29 October. Goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry put David Moyes’ side three clear before Dan Burn’s late header, and a club that has not lifted a major trophy since the 1995 FA Cup is now two ties from a Wembley final.

Garner and Hackney strike before the break

Everton went into the last-16 tie without Jack Grealish, unavailable for what the club called a “breach of club discipline”, and Newcastle started the better of the two sides. Will Osula was denied by a last-ditch James Tarkowski challenge just before the half-hour, and Harvey Barnes and Fabian Schär both forced Jordan Pickford into saves.

Then Everton struck. Garner opened the scoring in the 34th minute with a smart finish set up by Hackney, and Hackney added the second in the 45th minute with a first-time finish, Barry providing the assist. Two goals up at the break, in front of 51,894.

Jaissle’s triple change cannot turn it

Matthias Jaissle reacted at half-time with a triple change, sending on Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa for Jacob Ramsey, Harvey Barnes and Osula. Newcastle pushed hard: Amar Dedić twice shot from range just before the hour, the first looping off Hackney’s ankle, and Anthony Elanga sliced a wild effort into the stand behind the goal after a poor punch clear by Jordan Pickford.

Everton killed the tie in the 69th minute. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall broke away down the left and his low cross found Barry on the penalty spot. The striker took a touch and finished into the top corner, his seventh goal of the season.

A late goal and a scuffle

The final stretch turned scrappy. Fabian Schär and Vitaliy Mykolenko were booked after a scuffle in the box, and Burn headed in Joe Willock’s cross from the back post in the 88th minute. Burn and Pickford squared up in the aftermath, and Jordan Pickford, Tarkowski, Burn and Joelinton all went into the book. Newcastle had far more of the shooting all night, but Pickford and his defence held firm when it counted.

Fleetwood next

Everton’s reward is a quarter-final away at League Two Fleetwood Town, the side that knocked out Arsenal, in the week beginning 14 December. For Newcastle, it is an early exit from a competition they won in 2025, and more pressure on Jaissle.
