Courts and Harvey Norman are both discounting electricals and furniture this week, and the two chains count their savings in different ways. Courts prices against the recommended retail price. Harvey Norman prices against what it was charging itself, which is why several of its cuts look larger.
Headphones and a television
The Sony WH-1000XM6 in silver is S$509 at Courts, against a recommended retail price of S$649. At Harvey Norman, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones in black, second generation, are S$499, marked down from S$599.
Harvey Norman’s 65-inch LG 65UA8055PSA, a 4K LED set, is S$699 from S$899.

Kitchen and cleaning
The Tefal RK8868 is a 1.5-litre rice cooker with far infrared heating, and Courts has it at S$279 against a recommended S$499. The Philips Series 6000 R6 robot vacuum, the XU6500/82, is S$599 there against a recommended S$1,299.
Smaller items follow the same pattern. The Dreame Mini hair dryer in white is S$59 from a recommended S$89, the Ninja Blast portable blender in denim blue is S$89 from S$129, and a Sona 25-litre remote air cooler is S$269 from S$399.

Furniture and bedding
The Collin three-seater in full leather with black metal legs is S$1,539 at Harvey Norman, down from S$2,199. The King Koil Posture Woodville pocketed spring mattress is S$2,150, down from S$4,309.

What the two numbers mean
A recommended retail price is the brand’s own figure and does not move with the market, so a deep cut against RRP can still leave a product dearer than a rival shop selling the same model. Harvey Norman’s comparison is against its own earlier price, which is no guide to what another retailer wants for the same item.
Harvey Norman’s sit inside its 25th anniversary sale, and the chain has not set a closing date. Both chains price by store as well as online, so the shelf ticket at a branch can differ from the web price, and the Sony headphones are marked as an online exclusive at Courts.
