Tampines and Geylang meet with top spot on the line

Tampines Rovers and Geylang International meet at Our Tampines Hub on Sunday at 7.30pm with first place in the Singapore Premier League on the line, and a game in hand sitting with the home side.

Geylang lead on 13 points from five matches, with four wins and a draw. Tampines have played one fewer and won all four, scoring 13 and conceding three. A Tampines win takes them top on 15 points. A Geylang win opens a four-point gap.

Geylang’s defence against Tampines’ attack

The numbers set up the tie neatly. Geylang have conceded twice in five games, the meanest record in the league, and they have scored 12. Tampines have scored 13 in four and let in three, so the two best defensive records and two of the three best attacks land in the same fixture.

Neither side has lost. Something has to give at Our Tampines Hub, and the ground has been the venue for Tampines’ best football this season.

Sailors and Balestier chase from behind

Lion City Sailors sit third on 10 points from four games and play Balestier Khalsa at Bishan Stadium at the same time. The Sailors have the league’s leading attack with 16 goals in four matches, and they need a win to stay within range of the top two.

Balestier are fourth on seven points from two wins, a draw and two defeats. They have been the season’s early surprise, and a result against the Sailors would put them level on points with the champions.

The rest of the round

The weekend opens on Friday with Tanjong Pagar United against FC Jurong at Jurong East Stadium at 7.30pm. Both have six points from five games, and Jurong sit above on goal difference.

On Saturday, Hougang United host Young Lions at Bishan Stadium. Hougang have one point from five matches. Young Lions are bottom with no points and 21 goals conceded, the worst start in the division.

All four matches kick off at 7.30pm. The league then breaks and resumes from 20 to 22 November, when the Sailors play Geylang at Jalan Besar Stadium and Hougang host Tampines at Bishan.

What it means for the table

A Tampines win on Sunday would be the first time this season that Geylang have been knocked off the top, and it would leave three sides within four points. A Geylang win leaves Tampines needing to win their game in hand to draw level again, with the Sailors still in touch.

The title race has been tight since the opening weekend. Sunday is the first time the top two have met, and it comes before a three-week pause, which makes the result harder to shake off.
