The final lasted 1 hour 38 minutes. Fernandez, the No. 6 seed, had dropped only one set all week. She beat top seed Mirra Andreeva in straight sets in the quarters, then came from a set down against Maja Chwalinska in the semis before meeting Gibson in the Australian’s first tour final.

Fernandez thanked the crowd at The Kallang: “I would like to thank all the Singaporean fans and the Pinoy fans who came to watch.”

Nine games that closed the door

Gibson broke back twice early in the first set and held a set point at 5-4 on Fernandez’s serve. A mishit handed the Canadian the hold to 5-all. That hold started a run of nine straight games. She broke to close the opener 7-5, then ran the second set 6-0 without facing a break point. She won 82 per cent of her first-serve points in the second set.

Three of Fernandez’s six titles have now come in Asia: Hong Kong 2023, Osaka 2025 and Singapore 2026. The WTA projects her to rise to No. 26 on Monday’s rankings after she started the week at No. 31. Gibson is projected to climb to a career-high No. 37, which would put her ahead of Kimberly Birrell.

“Seeing that I was able to go through this type of adversity this week gives me the belief that I can do it again,” Fernandez said, with the China Open in Beijing next. Gibson leaves with her first WTA final and is projected to become Australia’s top-ranked woman on Monday.
