Brighton beat Manchester United 3-2 in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford

Brighton & Hove Albion beat Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, completing a Carabao Cup third-round comeback after trailing by two goals inside 10 minutes.

Shea Lacey scored in the 8th minute on his first United start, and Mason Mount made it 2-0 in the 10th after Marcus Rashford’s shot was saved. Brighton replied through Charalampos Kostoulas in first-half stoppage time, then Pascal Groß (65′) and Maxim De Cuyper (69′) turned the tie around.

How the comeback unfolded

Kostoulas finished after a long diagonal cut United’s defence open just before the break. Groß levelled from close range midway through the second half, and De Cuyper, on as a substitute, scored the winner three minutes later. United introduced Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha late; Rashford’s one-on-one was saved.

What it means for Carrick

United exit the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle for a second straight season. It was the first time in 50 years that a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford ended in a home defeat. Michael Carrick’s side next face Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.
