Champions League Quarter-Final Recap: Bayern Stun Real Madrid in Seven-Goal Thriller as Semi-Final Draw Is Set

Bayern Munich 4-3 Real Madrid (5-4 on aggregate) — Seven-Goal Epic Sends Bayern Through

The Allianz Arena in Munich lit up for a Champions League night
The Allianz Arena was the stage for an unforgettable seven-goal thriller between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

The headline tie of the Champions League quarter-finals more than lived up to its billing. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid produced one of the great European nights at the Allianz Arena on 16 April, with the German side prevailing 4-3 on the night and 5-4 on aggregate to knock out the holders.

Bayern took an early lead through Jamal Musiala before Real Madrid equalised via Kylian Mbappé. The lead changed hands repeatedly in a breathless second half. Harry Kane restored Bayern’s advantage from the penalty spot, only for Jude Bellingham to level again. Leroy Sané and Vinicius Junior then traded goals in a frantic final 15 minutes before Thomas Müller — introduced as a substitute — headed in the winner in the 88th minute to send the Allianz Arena into raptures.

It was a night of high drama that underscored why the Champions League remains the pinnacle of club football. Bayern will feel they have unfinished business in this competition after several near misses in recent seasons, and their fans will dare to dream once more.

Arsenal 0-0 Sporting CP (1-0 on aggregate) — Gunners Grind Their Way Through

Arsenal secured a place in the Champions League semi-finals after a nervy goalless draw with Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium

If Bayern match was a fireworks display, Arsenal second leg against Sporting CP was a tense chess match. The Gunners went into the tie at the Emirates Stadium on 15 April protecting a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg in Lisbon, courtesy of Kai Havertz late goal.

Mikel Arteta side were far from their fluid best, and Sporting nearly caught them out. Geny Catamo struck the post with a volley just before half-time, while at the other end, Leandro Trossard saw a header crash off the woodwork late on. The combined expected goals tally was a meagre 0.93 — the lowest of any Champions League match this season.

It was not pretty, but Arsenal will not care one bit. The goalless draw was enough to see them through 1-0 on aggregate, and they have now reached consecutive Champions League semi-finals for the first time in the club history. With their Premier League title challenge in full swing — they sit top of the table with 70 points — this is shaping up to be a truly special season for the north London club.

Liverpool 0-2 PSG (0-4 on aggregate) — Dembele Ends Anfield Dream

Liverpool Champions League campaign came to a crushing end as PSG dismantled them 4-0 on aggregate at Anfield

Anfield has witnessed some of football greatest European comebacks, but there would be no miracle on 14 April. Already trailing 2-0 from the first leg in Paris, Liverpool needed a performance for the ages — instead, they were comprehensively outclassed by a ruthless PSG side.

The Reds best chance came midway through the second half when they were awarded a penalty, only for the decision to be overturned following a VAR review. That proved to be the turning point. Ousmane Dembele struck in the 72nd minute with a crisp left-footed shot from the edge of the area, before adding a second in stoppage time to seal a dominant 4-0 aggregate victory.

For Liverpool, it represents a bitterly disappointing end to their European campaign. With Alisson ruled out until the end of the season and just one win in their last five matches across all competitions, Arne Slot side are in a worrying run of form heading into the business end of the Premier League season.

Atletico Madrid 1-2 Barcelona (3-2 on aggregate) — Simeone Men Survive Scare

In the other quarter-final on 14 April, Atletico Madrid were given an almighty fright by Barcelona at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Diego Simeone side had taken a 2-0 first-leg lead to the Spanish capital, but the visitors tore into them from the start.

Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres scored twice inside the opening 24 minutes to level the tie on aggregate, and suddenly Barcelona smelled blood. However, Ademola Lookman first-half reply steadied Atletico nerves, and when Eric Garcia was shown a red card for a professional foul in the 79th minute, Barcelona hopes were effectively extinguished.

Atletico held on to advance 3-2 on aggregate, but Simeone will know his side will need to be far more convincing in the semi-finals.

Semi-Final Draw: Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid, PSG vs Bayern Munich

The Champions League semi-final draw has pitted two mouth-watering ties. Arsenal will face Atletico Madrid, with the first leg at the Civitas Metropolitano on Wednesday, 30 April and the return at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, 6 May.

Paris Saint-Germain will take on Bayern Munich, with the first leg at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, 29 April and the second leg at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, 7 May.

Arsenal tie with Atletico promises to be a fascinating tactical battle between Arteta possession-based style and Simeone defensive organisation. Meanwhile, PSG versus Bayern is a clash of European heavyweights, with the defending champions against the side who produced one of the quarter-final performances of the season.

The Champions League final will be held in Budapest on 30 May 2026. The stage is set for what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to this season competition.
