I’m Wilber. You might already know that I love tech and cars. I’m a huge mobile phone enthusiast, both Android and Apple. Over the years, I’ve used devices from both ecosystems, and I truly appreciate the flexibility Android offers for customization, while Apple’s focus on security and seamless connectivity within their ecosystem is impressive.
Recently, I had the opportunity to get hold of the new HONOR Magic6 Pro, a device that reminds me of my former Huawei Mate20 Pro. HONOR, once a sub-brand of Huawei, is now owned by Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co. Ltd. Despite this change, HONOR retains some of Huawei’s DNA, giving me confidence in its reliability.
This review captures my hands-on experience with the phone, focusing on its capabilities for generating content, taking photos, and videos. Here’s my comprehensive take on this sleek, high-spec device.
Inside the Box
When you unbox the HONOR Magic6 Pro (Singapore set), you’ll find the phone, a transparent case, and a 100W charger. Unlike Samsung and Apple, who no longer include chargers in the box, HONOR includes one. The transparent case is a temporary solution until your new case arrives.
Key Design Features
- HONOR NanoCrystal Shield Curved Screen: The strong glass with curved edges adds a premium feel and is easy to hold.
- Battery King: The 5600 mAh battery ensures long-lasting performance.
- Fingerprint and 3D Facial Scanner: Enhanced security with dual biometric options.
One downside of the design is the large camera bump, which prevents the phone from lying flat on a surface. This can be a minor inconvenience for some users.
Colour Options
The HONOR Magic6 Pro is available in two elegant colours: Black and Epi Green (Vegan leather texture). I’m not a fan of this shade of green and would rather prefer the option of black colour in a similar leather texture.
Design, Display, and Build
The HONOR Magic6 Pro features a 6.8-inch LTPO Quad Curved Floating Screen with HONOR NanoCrystal Shield. The curved OLED screen offers up to 5000 nits of brightness, making it the brightest screen in its class, perfect for outdoor use.
The phone includes 4320Hz PWM Dimming, Dynamic Dimming, Customizable Circadian Night Display, and Nature Tone feature, reducing eye strain in low light conditions. It boasts an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, like any high-end flagship model.
Performance and Battery
- Processor: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
- Battery: 5600 mAh
- Charging: 80W wired and 66W wireless HONOR SuperCharge
- Memory: 12GB RAM, 512GB storage
Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, the HONOR Magic6 Pro delivers top-notch performance, handling multitasking and intensive applications seamlessly. The device supports 80W wired and 66W wireless HONOR SuperCharge, ensuring quick charging times.
The 5600mAh battery is one of the largest on the market, ensuring it lasts all day effortlessly.
Security and Privacy
The HONOR Magic6 Pro prioritizes your security with 3D face recognition and a fingerprint sensor. I’m happy to see that the on-screen fingerprint sensor is so smooth.
Camera and Videography
The HONOR Magic6 Pro is equipped with a rear impressive camera setup:
- 180MP Periscope Telephoto Camera: 2.5x Optical Zoom, 100x Digital Zoom
- 50MP Super Dynamic HONOR Falcon Camera
- 50MP Ultra-Wide Camera: 122° field of view
These cameras, combined with the HONOR Falcon Capture Algorithm, make taking photos a breeze. Every shot is instant and turns out beautifully, whether you’re using auto mode or AI Motion Sensing Capture. Even though you have 100x Digital Zoom will you ever use it? I won’t because the images aren’t sharp at all.
For those who like manual mode, the super dynamic self-adjusting HONOR Falcon Camera features an f/1.4-f/2.0 self-adjusting aperture, perfect for photos with bokeh effects. For me, the auto bokeh is good enough!
The front Camera comes with 50MP Ultra-Wide Camera, ideal for selfies and vlogging.
While the video quality is good, allowing 4K 60fps video recording, it doesn’t quite match the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Videos can feel a bit sluggish, but compared to other Android phones, the HONOR Magic6 Pro stands out as one of the better options available.
Special Features
The HONOR Magic6 Pro comes packed with innovative AI features that enhance user experience and convenience:
- Magic Portal: Allows for seamless content sharing and interaction.
- Intelligent Tracking by Hand Gestures: Control your phone with simple hand movements.
- Magic Capsule: HONOR’s answer to Apple’s Dynamic Island, providing quick access to notifications and app shortcuts.
- Lockscreen Customisation and Always-On Display: Personalize your phone to match your style.
- AI Privacy Call: Minimizes background noise in noisy environments, ensuring voice clarity.
- Standby Mode: When the phone is placed on its side, it displays a standby screen that doubles as an alternative bedside clock.
Conclusion
The HONOR Magic6 Pro boasts a sleek design, smooth performance, and an impressive camera system, making it a serious contender. While the camera bump is prominent and video may not match the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s fluidity, it remains an excellent Android choice. Plus, Google apps are fully integrated!
With Google apps seamlessly built-in, it delivers everything a modern user desires. At S$1399, it’s a flagship phone at an attractive price.
