Spoiler alert, tech shows are getting really bad. I visited the Consumer Electronics Exhibition 2024 at the Suntec Convention Centre and I think I wasted an hour of my time.
In the past, tech shows were about getting the best deals. The crowds were insane and just about every brand was there. If you wanted Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, HP, Dell, you could see a plethora of options at insane prices. I remember the tech show as being the place where I got the best deals on hard disks, RAM, the latest Google Pixel. I incidentally got onto the Pixel bandwagon for a few years because I picked up an unbelievable deal at a tech show on a Pixel. That was pre-Covid.
Post Covid, tech shows are just horrible.
Still, I had to try to identify some decent deals.
For starters, this is the first time I am coming face to face with the new Asus Zenbook Duo (2024). I owned the previous version of the Asus Zenbook Duo and I think this reiteration is so much better. It truly is a dual screen laptop.
This was the crowd at about 6 pm on a Thursday.
For those of you looking for a customisable mechanical keyboard, this Mash booth had a wide array of options. This was something I found interesting. Much more interesting than looking at household appliances…
As usual Prism is at the show. They are really trying to encompass almost all household appliances are they not?
I checked, the deals for Hisense televisions at the show are better than the options online.
I was quoted $26xx for this TV.
This brings laziness, I mean, innovation to a whole new level. This helps you stir fry food without actually rotating and flipping a wok.
I have no idea how sofas can fall under the umbrella of consumer electronics. This is what tech shows have descended into.
Some deals from Singtel.
There was a stage all the way in one corner. The emcees were really trying to hype the crowd.
This is going for $269. I think it’s a decent deal. Just a basic hair dryer without the attachments.
If you need just a basic laptop, the M1 Macbook Air is a good deal at $1,029. I am still using the M1 Mac Mini as my desktop and a MacBook Pro with an M1 Pro chip. The M1 chips are way decent for the work I do. Even for rendering video.
This is the best deal I could find. The Ultrahuman Ring is retailing for $438.
The Samsung 49 inch OLED G9 gaming monitor is so sweet… This versus a new specked out iPad Pro. I would take this any day. My monitor is still fine though. So no excuses to shell out in excess of $2k for this sweet 240Hz gaming monitor…
Oh yes, there is another Samsung exhibition run by Courts within Suntec itself. Close to where Llao Liao is. I guess they could not be bothered to be part of the CEE exhibition.
Why do tech shows exist in this day and age?
Beats me…
