For starters, MacKenzie Rex Restaurant is not located near MacKenzie Road. Well at least it is quite near. In Singapore, the food outlets are often named after the street that they started business in. When they change location, they retain the street name in food outlet name. Hence we can have Redhill “something” in the east and “Bedok” something in the west.
You want to see the original MacKenzie Rex Restaurant? There is a picture of it behind the cashier desk.
It is above the sign that reminds patrons that if you want extra chilli, you need to pay an extra 30 cents. The sign looks quite old so I think they did not raise chilli prices when GST went up.
This is how the outlet looks like now. It is located at the roundabout at Prinsep Street.
It is as though time stood still. I am impressed that they have LED lighting!
There is definitely an old school, JB-vibe going on.
Most importantly, the place is clean.
Actually, most importantly, the food is halal. I have colleagues who are Muslim so we usually look out for halal fare so that everyone can eat together.
After our monthly meetings, we will have lunch together. This time it was MacKenzie Rex Restaurant. It was my suggestion. Some friend who I play football with had previously invited me on a few occasions to visit this place. However, I never had the time to tag along.
I would say, the prices are rather reasonable.
Pro tip, that costs 30 cents per pack. Remember to return it to them before settling the bill.
The food and portion size was decent. My colleagues commented that the food was good. They are to some extent, fussy eaters, so saying that the food is good is a huge plus!
The rice served is chicken rice. Just fyi. I have no idea if they have plain rice.
Verdict: Food was good. 7/10
Price: Affordable considering the location.
The total bill came up to just under $80 for 7 of us.
This just goes to show that you do not need to eat in a brand spanking new restaurant to enjoy decent food.
Yours sincerely,
Daryl
