Let me set the record straight. I do not eat cheese. I am lactose intolerant and hence I try to minimise my dairy intake. Moreover, I am vegetarian and in most vegetarian foods, there is no cheese. This is to cater to those who are vegan. By the way, being vegan means not consuming and using animal products. Vegetarians do not eat meat. There is a difference.
Therefore, when my colleagues told me that they had signed me up for a cheese-tasting event, I told them that I was perhaps the last person in the office who should be going for the event. Whatever the case, Wilber had to put the Honor phone to test at the event as Honor had sent us the phone to test and review. Therefore, I decided to go and be the one taking the photos with the phone while the rest of my colleagues tried the cheese at the event.
The event was held at L’Angelus restaurant along Club Street.
What a quaint little restaurant. It panned out to be a very pleasant night in a very pleasant restaurant. If you want a place with nice ambience, perhaps to bring a date or to celebrate a special occasion, do pay L’Angelus a visit. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
For tonight, the restaurant was booked for this private event.
Even before the event started, Wilber looked drunk.
Alcohol was served. Something that I too do not take. However, the staff were nice enough to give me a can of Coke Zero.
The restaurant looks nice, right? It is like a mishmash of posters on supposedly gawky-looking yellow walls but it somehow adds character to a place.
These were the cutting boards for the cheese. We got to bring back the cheese which we cut up.
The crackers were amazing. Where do I get them???
The word Singapore spelt out in cheese.
This was the cheese buffet. It was a very sumptuous spread. The cheesemonger for the night was Francois Robin. He went through every different type of cheese on the menu. I never knew there were so many types. Before tonight, cheese was just yellow and not so yellow.
This man speaks with great gusto. Initially, I was not going to try much as I am not used to eating cheese but I think I had to try a little bit of everything because of Robin’s energy.
Oh, and we were told not to eat this at one go. We had to eat this with music. Which was a strange thing for me to do but I followed along. Very nice experience though.
That black thing on top of the cheese is marmite!
This guy is Willie. He will smile whenever there is food and alcohol.
The place was really crowded. The event was very well organised. You see everyone standing and holding that small block of cheese? Robin had us follow his queue as to when to eat the cheese.
This was how we cut our own cheese to take home.
Do not rush. Take your time. Things will fall into place…
We seldom bother about food presentation. It is nice to see how we can put together a nice box of cheese to take home to our families. I am a person who is always in a rush. A meal is a 15-minute occurrence.
Of course, I had to take a photo with Francois Robin!
Wilber and Willie ate a lot. No wonder they are looking so cheerful. Willie should have been drunk.
We are so fortunate to live in Singapore. We get to experience so many different cultures. French culture is something that I hardly experience. It was so pleasant to spend an evening learning about cheese.
Thank you L’Angelus, Francois Robin and everyone who organised the event. It was really good. It was a pleasant evening and I learned a lot about cheese.
Check out our video of Francois Robin sharing about the various French cheese!
Yours sincerely,
Daryl
