There was a time when Singapore television and theatre was good. I was fortunate to live during that time. It was the 90s and early 2000s. Remember shows like Growing Up, Phua Chu Kang and Under One Roof? That was a time when the acting was decent and the jokes actually caused laughter in households. Yes I do laugh at the current state of Singapore drama serials, not at the jokes that they crack.
That was how I got introduced to Selena Tan as an actress. She played Anita Chow, the girlfriend of Paul Tan, the eldest son of Tan Ah Teck. Moses Lim played Tan Ah Teck, the head of the household. Even though he started his career as an artiste for Channel 8, I believe his role in Under One Roof on Channel 5 was his most iconic.
This is Selena Tan.
If you have never seen her before, you are either young or you are old (or older) but for some reason never turned on the television. Which is possible because there was a time when not being able to watch the television was a valid punishment for children for being naughty or flunking some exam in school.
Selena Tan then went on to start Dim Sum Dollies, a musical cabaret trio group consisting of Selena herself, Emma Yong and Pamela Oei. Emma Yong passed away in 2012 and was replaced by Denise Tan. Denise eventually left the trio to focus on her radio career and was replaced by Jo Tan who remains with the group till today.
Well they are back! Technically they were back in 2022 after a seven year absence. So I guess they are back again?
For some reason I just think this photo is the most iconic out of them all.
I am a Dim Sum Dolly supporter. I genuinely think they are an act worth supporting. Selena Tan runs Dream Academy and they put up great shows. I particularly enjoyed this year’s Happy Ever Laughter. You can read my blog post about this year’s edition here:
I attended the premier of Happy Ever Laughter on the 20th of June
So what are they up to this time?
They have a performance titled “The History of Singapore. Sixty Sexy Years”. You know why I will be going for this performance? It is not to learn about the history of Singapore but more to reminisce about the time when Singapore theatre was good. Darn good.
You’ve got 2 weeks to catch this show. I personally feel an obligation to get this out to as many Singaporeans as possible to let them know what real acting and comedy really is.
It is time to make Singapore theatre great again…
Yours sincerely,
Daryl
