The Malayan Council is a popular restaurant serving halal fusion food. While it is usual that people stumble upon The Malayan Council for their food, their cakes are also very popular among diners. In this article, I will be looking at their cakes alone.
I do not indulge in dessert very often. However, when I do, it has to be the best. So when someone asks me where to get the best cake in the whole of Singapore, I usually gravitate to The Malayan Council’s Classic Ondeh-Ondeh cake.
You must be wondering. The best cake in the whole of Singapore? What does this cake look like?
Oh my goodness… It is like calling out to people who walk by.
When you go to The Malayan Council, you have to get this cake. Even if you are so full that you cannot eat any more, just stuff this in your mouth.
A closer shot…
See the coconut flakes on the outside… This cake is not overly sweet. The gula melaka is layered with the soft and moist pandan sponge cake. Sedap lah!
“But cannot everyone eat the same cake right?”
“Why cannot?”
A conversation in the office between me and another colleague.
Ok, so it is time to try other cakes from The Malayan Council. Maybe there are some other hidden gems.
So what I did was to go to The Malayan Council at Dunlop Street and order just about all the varieties of cakes they had on offer.
Ranking The Malayan Council cakes in order of personal preference, Ondeh Ondeh is the undisputed champion.
Coming in second is the Putu Piring flavour.
You know when you hear that the cake is putu piring flavoured and you do not know what to expect? Well, it really tastes like putu piring. It is flaky on top of being soft. Its sweetness is light and refreshing. I would say this comes a very close second to their ondeh ondeh flavoured cake. You think it would be weird but it truly is not.
Coming in a distant third is the Durian Pengat cake. Do not get me wrong. It is still a good cake. Just that I can think of other durian cakes from other offerings that are better than this. If the Ondeh Ondeh cake is a solid 10, the Putu Piring cake is a 9 and this would be an 8.
In fourth would be the Dark Chocolate Salted Caramel cake. There are crunchy bits in the middle of the cake. Kind of like specks of crunchy chocolate bits. Maybe these are made out of crunchy M&Ms. That is what it kind of tastes like. This comes in very closely behind the Durian Pengat. Mainly because I am Singaporean and when things are dead-tied, the impasse is broken by whichever cake has durian on it.
Next comes my daughter’s favourite cakes. This is too sweet in my opinion.
Chocolate Ovomaltine was also too sweet for my liking. But I can understand why kids would like these flavours. It is something you would order for your child while you are enjoying the Ondeh Ondeh cake.
Red Velvet Speculoos was not something I would order again though. One of my colleagues liked it.
Ok, this I did not like. Cempedak is plain weird tasting…
In conclusion, if you are at The Malayan Council, try the following cakes.
- Classic Ondeh-Ondeh
- Putu Piring
- Durian Pengyat
- Dark Chocolate Salted Caramel
Kids will love the following. Well, if you have a sweet tooth you would too…
- Nutella Volcano
- Chocolate Ovomaltine
The rest, in my personal opinion, are something I would not order.
For anyone who doubted whether I actually bought all these cakes to try…
You can thank me for my public service later. I think I need to report sick for diabetes…
Yours sincerely,
Daryl
