XW Western Grill at Raffles City. The new Ponderosa?

Ok, I am showing my age here. Do you remember Ponderosa at Plaza Singapura? It was this unlimited salad bar buffet restaurant that was very popular in the 1980s and 1990s. You order a main course and you get to savour a wide variety of salad bar options.

The difference between Ponderosa and XW Western Grill is that Ponderosa did not have a time limit. XW Western Grill does. There is a 90-minute time limit. However, how many of us have the time, or the ability, to sit down for such an extended period of time for a meal? Other than the difference in time limit, XW Western Grill is affordably priced and its salad bar offerings are relatively decent. Although I believe Ponderosa had soft serve on tap. I have no idea how I am remembering something that I had been to about 3 decades ago.

A main course at XW Western Grill costs slightly above $15. If you add on a set meal which consists of a drink and soup, that will cost an additional $5.90 and that bumps the price up to above $20.

For reference, here is the menu.

    Here is the drinks menu.

So once you order a main course, you will get access to the all-you-can-eat salad bar.

    Here is the salad bar…

The condiments are by the side.

This was round one for my colleague Wilber.

The spinach was very good. There are sweet potato fries at the salad bar. This begs the question of why the main courses come with a serving of fries.

The soup tasted like something out of a Campbell can.

I chose the Creamy Chicken and Mushroom Spaghetti without the chicken. This was very good. However, once again, there were pasta and mushroom options at the salad bar.

Fried Chicken and Honey Mustard Sauce.

Chargrilled Chicken and Fish. The presentation looks reminiscent of something at your nearby coffeeshop. But hey, so long as it tastes decent right?

Chargrilled Sirloin with Black Pepper Sauce.

The Chargrilled Salmon Steak. According to my colleagues, the skin was crispy and the fish was still soft.

If you do not know where this place is, it is located at B1 of Raffles City.

What’s up with the neon lights?

According to my colleague Wilber. This place is ok only. I would concur. The food is not fantastic but then it never claimed to be a place with fantastic food. It is a place with affordable prices.
